FTL stands for Faster Than Light.
There is no other speculative technology that is so irrovecably identified with science fiction than FTL. To the best of our current scientific knowledge, no material object or bit of information can travel faster than light. Yet, that does not keep visionaries from dreaming of the day we can beat a beam of light to the nearest stars, when the other side of the galaxy is no further away than the priming of a hyperdrive or a dive through a wormhole.
Deciding on what Tech Levels to assign FTL technologies is a bit problematic; most of the technologies discussed in this section depend much more on the nature of the universe turning out a certain way than on raw technical sophistication. The Tech Levels chosen reflect the level of advancement to construct a particular FTL scheme IF the laws of physics happen to work out that way.
