Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and is only slightly smaller than Earth. It is the brightest object in the sky besides the Sun and the Moon, and the morning star has intrigued dreamers for many centuries with its beauty.

In reality, though, Venus is a hellish nightmare of a planet, with a surface temperature hot enough to melt lead and air pressure great enough to crush an unprotected human being into pulp. Exploring Venus, and eventually setting foot upon it and taming it for practical use, will be one of the great challenges facing mankind as it moves out into the Solar System.

A surprising way to explore Venus.
